The ANN currently has 1000 members. We have set a goal to reach 1000 new members by the end of the 3rd quarter of 2007. The ANN volunteers and professionals have made the ANN such a valuable and informative resource for its' subscribers. We are asking you to help us obtain our goal and think of a friend or group that is not aware of the ANN and ask him/her/them to look at this invaluable resource. If everyone participates the ANN will succeed in its' goal.

Antifreeze Poisoning In Dogs And Cats I encountered my first case of antifreeze poisoning when I was fresh out of college. This was a dog that just didn’t seem right to its owners. When I examined the dog the only thing I could find that was wrong with it was some sensitivity to touch in its high abdomen and a lack of appetite. Unfortunately, the lab work showed that irreversible damage to the kidneys had already occurred. In my second case of antifreeze poisons I was much luckier. This was a Christmas Labrador puppy that was seen drinking antifreeze. I sent my staff to the neighborhood liquor store and purchased a fifth of vodka. I administered intravenous fluids and bicarbonate to this pup and kept him drunk for 72 hours. He recovered completely. Read the Full Story
CANINE INFLUENZA (Canine Flu)
According to DVMNews.com the canine influenza outbreak has now been confirmed in 22 states. New preliminary data suggests an infection rate of 16%. [That means of 100 dogs exposed to the virus, 16 will actually show clinical signs of fever, coughing, lethargy, poor appetite and respiratory distress such as sneezing and coughing. TJD] The mortality rate in the study suggests a higher mortality rate than previous reports. This new study suggests a mortality rate of 7%. COMMUNICATION and COMMANDS Understanding How Dogs Communicate
When we talk to our dog do we know how much they actually understand? Even their own name must be taught to them. Yet expect them to comprehend the nature and significance of our intricate language. I cannot tell you how many times people have said to me that their dog thinks it’s human. I always give the same answer "No it doesn't it thinks you're a dog" though not strictly true as dogs are conspecific, ie they can only form a true pack with their own kind. It does serve to emphasise that dogs are not humans in little furry coats. Their method of communication is primarily body language, olfactory and some verbal communication.
